Manage Pain with Acupuncture

It's possible to manage pain with acupuncture in a more natural way. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine developed over 2500 years ago. It uses extremely thin, solid needles inserted into the skin along specific points to stimulate healing. Acupuncture works to address imbalances by improving energy flow throughout the body. Generally, sessions last 30-60 minutes. The acupuncturist will ask questions to get more information then place the needles. Next, you can relax while the needles do their work. Electroacupuncture may be used sometimes during the session.

Tradition and research indicate acupuncture is very useful for many chronic conditions, especially painful ones. Pain from cancer, menstruation, labor pain, surgery, and migraines improves in most cases with acupuncture. One osteoarthritis study compared acupuncture to sham acupuncture, and they found it significantly reduced pain, increased mobility, and quality of life. More specifically, low back pain from any cause and muscle pain can also improve with acupuncture.

Managing pain can be tough, but acupuncture is generally regarded as safe. Additionally, it's well-tolerated by most people. Side effects such as a slight headache, localized pain, tiredness, or dizziness may occur temporarily after a treatment. Seeing a licensed acupuncturist is recommended to gain the greatest benefit, but dry needling from another licensed health professional may also be helpful. Talk to your local acupuncturist or holistic doctor to determine if acupuncture is right for you. Need a referral? Give us a call today!
