Healing with Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula spp.) is composed of several varieties, including L. latifolia, L. angustifolia, L. stoechas, and L. intermedia. This plant is native to the Mediterranean region, but it is cultivated globally. It grows well in warm, sunny climates and doesn’t need frequent watering.

Lavender essential oil (EO) is made using steam distillation. This EO, used topically, can reduce pain for some. Generally, lavender EO is well-tolerated, though it isn’t recommended to use it directly on the skin. EOs are best when diluted with a carrier oil. Mixing 2-3 drops of essential oil with 1 oz of coconut or aloe vera gel can help relieve skin burn symptoms, especially sunburns. Just apply the mixture to the burn. However, if the burn is large or the skin is severely damaged, seek medical attention.

When diffused, lavender can be relaxing and help reduce anxiety. Research studies found that using essential oils in the hospital air helped lower postoperative pain. Encapsulated lavender EO is used to support generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and anxiety-related restlessness without the drug side effects.

Lavender, as an herb or an essential oil, is relatively easy to find and use. A cup of lavender and chamomile tea supports relaxation at the end of the day. Dried lavender in a sachet under your pillow helps some people fall asleep more easily. Speak with your natural health practitioner or doctor before using it, especially if you are taking any medications. Looking for a natural opinion
