Basil’s Sweet Sister, Marjoram

If you have ever bought a spice rack loaded with seasonings, chances are marjoram is one of those spices. Origanum majorana, commonly known as marjoram, sweet basil, and wild oregano, is popular worldwide. Marjoram is used traditionally for skin diseases, stomach problems, heart concerns, and blood sugar imbalances. It also dealt with a variety of infections.

Marjoram displays antimicrobial effects against many microbes, including fungi and yeasts. In tincture form, marjoram supports digestive health and may lower the risk of ulcers. Additionally, research shows the leaf powder and extract may be heart- and liver-protective. It may help thin the blood and improve blood flow in the body. Sweet marjoram tea seems to help with insulin sensitivity and balancing hormones, especially DHEA-S. This means marjoram is a potential treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The essential oil is said to help with painful menstrual cramps and mood swings. More work still needs to be done to learn about this intriguing plant.

You can try it out as a whole herb, supplement, tea, tincture, or essential oil. Perhaps best of all, this plant is used in many kitchen recipes, especially meat and tomato dishes. Talk to your doctor before adding marjoram as a regular supplement or essential oil to your diet or routine. This essential oil is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.
